Making Apple Butter

I don't have a lot of pictures from this week, but we had a good week studying the mid - late 1700's. We learned about Benjamin Franklin. we read a biography mainly about his younger years and then we have been reading the first 2 books in the Felicity series. We made apple butter just like Felicity and her mom did in the second book, we also watched the Felicity movie. Molly made her own almanac. On Thursday we went bowling with a few of the kids from our Thursday group.

We made play dough and then that afternoon her and Keely played with it. We tried baking some of Molly's creations, but they didn't turn out so well, it was like they leaked out or somthing. I think they were just too thick.

Molly made a Jesus is the bread of Life napkin holder, which I now proudly display full of napkins on the diningroom table. The directions said to use a cracker box, but the pattern seeme too big for that box, plus my napkin would not have fit. Luckly I had this old camera box.

The bread turned out good, but we may have cooked it a little too long, it was pretty dark.
Molly's canoe, we were suppose to fold over some paper and punch holes and sew together, it was kinda generic but Molly liked it.


We had a great week of school. We learned about the french settlers and their use of canoes. Last week we did yeast experiments this week we did flour/dough making play dough and bread dough. We cheated a little and used the kitchen aid mixer instead of kneading by hand for 10 minutes. We made mini loaves of bread for 2 of our neighbors including a picture stating Jesus is the Bread of life and our verse from this week. I am going to try adding a unit study from a book called potraits of an american girl or something like that using the American Girl series. I am going to take and combine the unit on Felicity over the next 3 weeks I think it should fit in nicely, I just hope we don't get overwealmed, it's suppose to be fun, since Molly and I are big fans of the dolls and books (thanks Grandma!)

Week 6 Bread of Life, New Netherland (New York), Bread

our art work, I am using something called art with a purpose that I picked up somewhere since Molly didn't care for the other program we had. We learned how to draw trees and then put blossoms on for spring, we will continue with this lesson till we do all four seasons.

It was a pretty good week except for one day when Molly was less than thrilled about doing school. Molly is enjoying piano lessons and our Thursday afternoons where we get together with 3 other homeschooling families. We took a field trip this week to the Brickyard School house in Merrill. They did a nice job, I think it is kept up by the historical society and then all retired school teachers volunteers teach the kids for the day. Molly joined the first grade class from St. Johns and it was great because they learned the Johny Appleseed prayer and sang a song about Jesus. We are learning about Jesus being the bread of life and in science are studying yeast, we did an experiment mixing yeast and sugar to blow up a baloon, my baloon was really small so I don't know if it would have gotten bigger had I used a bigger one. We also made butter this week as we studied about the early settlers from Holland and how they brought over animal such as cows and all the uses they had for the milk. It took us about 10 minnutes to make butter and it really tasted good. I also let the kids have a pajama day on Friday since we didn't have to go anywhere that day.

Here Molly is making an oiled paper like the pilgrims may have used or oiled clothe for windows since they did not have glass.

The last thing we had to do this week was plant corn like the pilgrims would have. We learned how Squanto had taught the Pilgrims how to plant and to burry 3 fish along with the corn ( we made paper fish, I've heard it can get pretty stinky otherwise. Pray that our corn will grow, I just used popcorn and in the past I have not been to good with growing things. If you have ever been to our home you may have noticed I do not have a single plant. We are suppose to keep track of the corn and save it for Thanksgiving.

This was another fun week, but I had to kind of rush it since we took Friday off for a mini vacation to Iowa and southern Minnesota. We did spent a lot of time on Natives Americans, we read the book Naya Nuki about an Indian girl who was captured and then escapes. We also read some shorter books about the way the Natives lived. We also did some star gazing and learned about the sun. Every day we had snack time with a different food the Indians would have ate - we did beef jerky(dried buffalo meat), popcorn, fruit roll-up(fruit leather), pumkin seeds and Indian fry bread. We also had a field trip to the apple orchard. We also made candles that said Jesus is the light of the world.

Adventures in My Fathers world week 3

last week was so great!. I am really loving this curriculum and homeschool in general. I am so glad God is confirming our decision to homeschool and our choice of curriculum. This week was all about Jamestown and Captain John Smith and more Science with air. We finished up a book about John Smith and then started Squanto and finished that book this weekend. Now we can fit in more fun books for week 4 since we are ahead in our reading.

In Bible we learned that we are to be like Jesus and talked about WWJD and made a necklace with a kit Molly got for her birthday (thanks Ruth and Miriam)
here we learned that air can hold things in place, even upside down like this cup full of water covered with cardboard. Molly was pretty impressed when the cardboard held in place.
we learned how the people in Jamestown mostly had corn to eat and made corn bread, so we made some that night for supper to go with our chilli on baked potatos
Molly decided she really dosen't like cornbread because it wasn't sweet enough. I said be glad you don't have to eat it all the time like the people in Jamestown did.
Also in Bible class this week we made a sun catcher for the window using crayon shavings with the name of JESUS on it. Keely thought it was fun to blow on the shavings and have them all go flying
This was a little craft I threw in that I found in a book from the library, it's a Jamestown house, but it really was a little dificult and messy.

Last weekend we took Molly's ships from week 3 and sailed them on the Wisconsin River from Council Grounds State Park, but the water wasn't moving much and we didn't really see them go far. Next week in Native Americans and Molly is excited she is already planning on being Pocohontas for the Halejuah Ho Down this year.

We have now finished our second full week of school and I am loving it, and Molly is for the most part lol. We both have to get used to our new schedule and new teacher. I have been getting some of "that's not how we did in school" but for the most part things are going well. I have to say for me I am loving it and wish I had started homeschooling sooner, but I guess this was God's plan for our family. This week we study Christopher Columbus and his voyage from Spain to North America. We made boats to sail representing the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. We also studied the song "God Bless America" and began our study in science on air - we did and experement with an empty bottle to see if it was really empty or not. Conclusion - it was full of air. We also began our study on the names of Jesus "The Lord Saves"
